Private Health Insurance in Canada

For those not aware:  Private medical care is not illegal in Canada, but the provinces do employ a number of disincentives to discourage a parallel private system.

Duplicate insurance, which allows people to seek care in private, hospitals while still being covered by the public system, is illegal, in Canada. You can however buy Private International Health Insurance from MedExPlan, an American international insurer as above. In Canada an average of $630 dollars is spent annually by individuals or private insurance companies for health care (extended health cover for employee groups), including dental, eye care, and drugs, but this is supplemental private insurance or self insurance for benefits not covered by provincial plans, so called extended health benefits.

Private insurance
covering publicly insured services are illegal:

This is why no private insurer, or cooperative, offers private health insurance in Canada, but International Private Health Insurance solutions are available outside Canada from firms like MedExPlan which is an inexpensive international US based plan with a Swedish Underwriter. MedExPlan’s underwriter has an A+ Standard and Poors financial strength rating.
